Workshop: un fine settimana di storytelling foto-cicloturistico

Il primo Laboratorio di storytelling di 3 giorni in Val Maira, in alcuni dei più suggestivi luoghi della bassa valle: dalla Riserva Naturale dei Ciciu del Villar, al Ponte del Diavolo di Dronero, dal ciclo di edifici religiosi ispirati ai martiri della Legione Tebea, fino ai palazzi nobiliari del Marchesato di Saluzzo.

Lavoreremo in un piccolo gruppo per:

lavorare allo storytelling di un viaggio o un’escursione in bici, con particolare attenzione agli aspetti che interessano ognuno di noi (le persone, i paesaggi, i luoghi, ecc.)
creare un (mini) progetto
preparare e gestire il materiale
ottimizzare un flusso di lavoro leggero da viaggio

Insomma, è un workshop completo con briefing tecnici, sessioni pratiche di scatto in bici e lezioni di post-produzione: non esploreremo soltanto i sentieri gravel, ma anche i temi, le ispirazioni e le tecniche per raccontare un’uscita di un giorno o un viaggio di mesi: ne parliamo spesso qui, e approfondiremo un po’ tutto a seconda delle nostre esigenze di pedalatori-narratori.
Le sessioni pratiche partiranno direttamente da Casa Bart, in sella alla propria bici, accompagnati da Luca, Guida Cicloturistica della Regione Piemonte. Poichè le sessioni pratiche si svolgeranno su terreni misti, con sali-scendi divertenti, a volte impegnativi, ma mai troppo lunghi, è richiesta una buona preparazione fisica.

Saremo ospiti di Casa Bart, bike hotel con tutti i servizi e un’ospitalità eccellente.

Giro d’Italia tappa 2: obiettivi raggiunti, obiettivi mancati e foto analizzate (e prime impressioni sulla OM1 mkII)

Cosa, quando, dove:

5 maggio 2024, Velodromo Francone, San Francesco al Campo. Una mattina alla partenza della II tappa del Giro d’Italia, per valorizzare la struttura e il fascino del Velodromo Francone.

In una mezza giornata ho scattato circa 900 foto, di cui due terzi con Om1 mark II + 40-150 [ho scritto qui una piccola recensione della nuova macchina] e un terzo con Em1 +12-40 (e alcune con il 7-14).

Il Giro non è la mia cup of tea: preferisco eventi dove il fango supera il glamour. Però questa è l’élite del ciclismo mondiale su strada, quindi dire che è brutto da fotografare sarebbe una frottola bella e buona. Bisogna dire anche che è facile fare “foto buone”: atleti professionisti, il non plus ultra della tecnologia ciclistica e un ricchissimo apparato di staff, media, organizzazione: insomma, il tutto è decisamente colorato, movimentato e nel complesso affascinante. Funziona.

Obiettivi primari ma soprattutto secondari

Proprio perché è un evento relativamente facile da fotografare, sono andato con alcuni obiettivi specifici oltre all’incarico del caso. Questo era mettere in risalto la struttura del Velodromo Francone in vista di una gara di ultra che si terrà a luglio, la VIA Race, che puoi seguire anche qui. I circa 140 partecipanti partiti dal Sud della Spagna dovranno raggiungere Giovinazzo, sulle orme di Annibale, in una gara di 4000km senza tappe: percorreranno dai 300 ai 600km al giorno, e il Francone sarà uno dei Rifugi pronti ad accoglierli per una breve sosta. Per quanto mi riguarda, li seguirò da quando entrano in Italia fino al traguardo: sarano dieci giorni di fuoco, e non vedo l’ora.

Ero già stato al Francone per il Turin International Cyclocross del Natale 2022. In quell’occasione avevo scattato per divertimento e per allenamento. Tornarci in veste semi-ufficiale è stato un piacere, e avevo già un’idea dei luoghi; anche se tra il ciclocross invernale e il Giro primaverile, il posto era praticamente irriconoscibile.

Dicevamo, obiettivi secondari. Non mi interessava molto fotografare i big – alias Pogacar, visto che quasi tutti gli altri sono fuori gioco; ma tutti indistintamente. Oltre a valorizzare i luoghi, volevo concentrarmi sui dettagli: cioè i gesti, gli oggetti particolari, le espressioni; questo non solo degli atleti, ma anche dei membri dei team e del pubblico e/o organizzatori. Spesso uno sbadiglio, l’attesa di un caffè o un gesto istintivo aggiungono profondità alla narrazione, dandole un mood specifico. Quest’anno è uno degli aspetti su cui voglio lavorare.

Com’è andata? Un bilancio e alcuni esempi.

Ci sono riuscito? Solo in parte. Alcuni scatti su questo tema ci sono, come quelli qua sopra. Mi soddisfa quello dello scambio dei pennarelli, in cui il colore funziona e le braccia formano linee quasi astratte; Ma sono pochi e non interessanti come avrei voluto. Insomma, non mi lasciano soddisfatto. Perché?

Ragionandoci, credo che i motivi siano due, tra l’altro strettamente connessi.

Primo: procedure, procedure, procedure!

Tra l’arrivo dei team e la partenza passano, al più, due ore. In mezzo succede di tutto: i meccanici preparano le bici, gli atleti si riscaldano, i team manager confabulano, gli atleti salutano il pubblico, gli atleti pedalano pigramente fino al palco per la presentazione, gli atleti si fanno intervistare, gli atleti tornano al bus oppure vanno alla partenza. Tutto questo secondo un rito ben collaudato e nel clamore dei tifosi, sempre numerosi. A Bra mi sono occupato della festa in città, quindi potevo andare abbastanza a sentimento; mentre qui avevo accesso al podio e ad altre aree riservate, il palco dove si svolge tutto questo teatro; conoscere le procedure è essenziale per anticipare i movimenti e prevedere situazioni, per avvicinarsi di più, e di conseguenza per scattare foto più efficaci.

Non solo: con l’esperienza si conoscono anche le abitudini delle squadre, addirittura dei singoli ciclisti: anche questo è un patrimonio prezioso per migliorare la quota di foto valide; ma è un privilegio riservato ai fotografi che seguono molte tappe del Giro e in diversi anni, come il mitico Marco Alpozzi.

Secondo: WORK THE SCENE? Sì, no, forse, dipende.

Questa è la seconda lezione. Certo, sarebbe bello avere tempo per studiare la scena e fare numerosi tentativi fino a trovare lo scatto perfetto. Quando si può, è molto interessante, come per esempio racconta Marco a proposito della 12H del Mugello: la divisa del colore giusto, il gesto inaspettato, la silhouette suggestiva. In questo, la pianificazione prima dell’evento è cruciale, e poi basta avere tempo per beccare il momento giusto.

Solo che il tempo non c’è. Bisogna spremere tutto in un paio d’ore. Gli spostamenti sono resi lenti dal pubblico, gli spazi sono ampi, i parcheggi sono sparsi qua e là a qualche centinaio di metri, e sono a loro volta a una certa distanza dal velodromo e dal palco dove le squadre sfilano prima della partenza.

Insomma, non si può pensare di scattare tutto: la selezione degli spot è ancora più importante del solito. Una volta ottenuto uno scatto buono in una zona, avrei dovuto mollare l’osso e cambiare subito area. In casi come questi il meglio è nemico del bene, e intestardirsi è controproducente: non porta a scatti migliori ma a perdere potenziali scatti. Fatta una foto che trasmette efficacemente quello che vogliamo, via verso il prossimo spot. Qualche esempio? Ecco alcune analisi di foto.

NB: se avessi scattato per me, sarei rimasto tutte le 2h in un paio di spot e avrei, appunto, lavorato la scena a fondo. Dato che l’incarico era altro, però, non potevo concentrarmi solo su un paio di spot.

La lavagna trasparente è un classico. La scena della firma è molto fotogenica, con i ciclisti che interagiscono con i reporter e tra di loro. Sono riuscito a catturare alcuni momenti che mi interessavano, come il cambio di mano dei pennarelli e l’infilata delle gambe; ma nel complesso ho gestito male la situazione, insistendo troppo per perfezionare la foto: non sono riuscito a fare nulla di clamoroso, e contemporaneamente ho perso potenziali scatti nelle altre aree. Ho una dozzina di foto buone della firma, più o meno tutte con stessa inquadratura: uno spreco. Invece, per fare un esempio, avrei dovuto fare questa foto anche in versione “invertita”, mettendo a fuoco gli spalti per sottolineare il folklore a scapito del ciclista. Un errore banale.

Quando i bus sono arrivati e hanno cominciato a scaricare il materiale, ho agganciato un meccanico e volevo trovare un riflesso interessante nei suoi occhiali a specchio. Una scritta, un logo, una forma interessante sarebbero bastati per far funzionare la foto. Non ci sono riuscito, e nel frattempo sono passati 5 preziosi minuti. Sigh.

Uno dei ciclisti si stava rifugiando nel minivan, non sembrava tanto entusiasta all’idea di gareggiare; intanto i suoi compagni e i meccanici ronzavano intorno tra caffè e ultime messe a punto. Se avessi avuto tempo, mi sarei allontanato per usare un mezzo tele e per tenere insieme una scenetta “triangolare” da sinistra a destra: il ragazzo in piedi con il caffé, un atleta che fruga nel retro, il ragazzo timido – il vero soggetto, anche se molto discreto – e magari un’ultima figura a destra, come quinta per chiudere. Ma non avevo tempo e sono andato via, non senza rammarico.

Lezioni utili; prime impressioni con la nuova Om1mkII.

Insomma, non è stata una giornata di grandi soddisfazioni, ma l’obiettivo primario è stato raggiunto, mentre tutte queste foto non riuscite sono state un ottimo allenamento: tanti errori significa tanti spunti e una motivazione in più per i prossimi lavori.

Intanto è stata la prima occasione in cui ho usato la OM1markII come prima macchina, dopo alcune settimane di familiarizzazione e setup da quando l’ho acquistata dai mitici Foto Renata. Il verdetto fin qui è positivo. L’esperienza di scatto è molto gradevole, un passo avanti rispetto alla Em1, quasi certamente grazie al mirino e al display più fluidi e definiti. L’AF è ottimo, molto più evoluto rispetto alla Em1. Devo ancora perfezionare i settaggi per farlo lavorare al meglio, ma intanto ho capito che il riconoscimento opportuno per il ciclismo è quello delle persone, non dei mezzi. Resta da capire se, per come scatto io, è più comodo dare la priorità al tracking (ignorando l’area di MAF) oppure, come sto facendo, limitare il tracking all’interno dell’area di MAF. Qualche migliaio di scatti serviranno a dissipare questo e altri dubbi operativi: vedremo prossimamente al Gravel Gourmet o sul Mont Ventoux.

Gran Prix d’Inverno XC Torre Canavese: weatherproof gear, but what about us?

What is weatherproof (or weather sealed) anyway?

How far can I go with my gear in bad weather? That’s everybody’s question when conditions are not friendly. This is mainly because cameras have a “weatherproof” build, but this is a very vague mark. It is not an IP certification: as far as I know, only Leica and Olympus offer this on some recent model: IP52 for Leica Q2, IP53 for OM system OM-1, which means dustproof and water-sealed for spray at 60 degrees.

As for me, neither Em1mkII nor Em1mkIII provide this IP ranking. Yet they are known to be very well built and weathersealed, just a tad less than the Em1X.

It already happened to shoot in hard conditions in a few occasions: last September, during 150s-miles gravel event, it poured rain for 2hrs in the morning and 4hrs in the afternoon, and I had my mkIII in the Evoc capture, both soaked. No problem whatsoever, except the inevitable condensation.

Also, in 2022, I shot the swim start of an Ironman, and I had the MkII a few inches over the sea; I was close enough to people to be completely wet; in this case, the camera probably lost its Wi-fi capabilities (although I have no proof of direct cause/effect). 10.000 people rushing into the sea near you can do that, I suppose.

XC Torre Canavese “Grand Prix d’inverno: a different bad weather

Last weekend was different – a totally different story. The XC weekend in Torre Canavese, first stage of many national categories, took place in the worst condition I ever experienced, simply because we worked a whole day in pouring rain, with almost no breaks. Harsh conditions to ride, and a great test for the cameras, for sure.

The job was great: shooting freely to tell the story of the weekend, its mood, its highlights and the overall context. A great liberty to enjoy. Races were plenty, since many categories were racing 1-hour stage (meaning 3 to 4 laps depending on the category) all day long.

Saturday: bad, but not too bad.

On the first race day, the sky was dark, but the rain was intermittent. Never too heavy, and some precious breaks allowed to dry the gear and have some rest. As the pictures show, the terrain absorbed most of the water. Not a very hard day.

Sunday: bad, very bad.

Luckily enough, my friend Luigi – also a passionate bikepacker and photographer with whom we recently explored Alpe Bianca – asked me to come along to improve his skills in cycling photography. I’m always glad to have company, but this specific day it was relieving to share the burden with a friend. The weather forecast was bad, so we were ready (or we thought we were).

Around 8, under moderate rain, we met the organizers at the start. First news of the day: no athlete was test-riding on the track, because of the heavy rain. So we prepared for the first race: after some quick shot at the start, we ran to our spots in the Discesa del Cinghiale – the steepest downhill, a few hairpins in the woods with a techy single track. The cameras had 12-40 2.8 and 40-150 2.8. While saturday I could change lenses, using the 7-14 for some shots, on sunday changing lenses in these conditions was not an option; there was no shelter within a kilometer, so we kept the initial setup. Even replacing batteries (which was necessary around 1pm) was tricky. Second news of the day: all races would be shortened by one lap, since the mud was considerably slowing down all the riders.

Only the most skilled riders were able to ride the whole Cinghiale downhill, while most of them had to walk/slide down by it, and some fell on the hairpins. Luigi and I both stayed along this section to work the scene and get the most out of it. After the race ended, we decided to stay more or less in the same spots. I put my cameras in my backpack, to give them some break from the rain.

My colleague did not: when the second race started, 15 min later, his focus/shutter button didn’t work. He went back in town to solve it while I shot three more laps before joining him.

It seemed that water had infiltrated the button, and his camera – Fuji Xt2: “water resistant”, but not weatherproof – was unable to operate. So I lent him my Em1mkIII with the long zoom, 40-150 f2.8 PRO. Meanwhile, my waterproof jacket was beginning to cave in. No worries, I had 2 more waterproof layers!

Midday races were really wet. The girls raced in grueling conditions, while the terrain became more and more unpredictable and large pools formed in the flat sections. My second layer gave up, and my friend -as wet as me – kept shooting with my EM1, mostly at the finish, to capture the third half. We wanted to get lots of hugs, stretching, kisses, and fatigue. meanwhile, water started to seep in my waterproof backpack and my last layer of clothes.

The last two races were the most awaited, but also the most… submerged from start to finish. During the first one, Luigi stayed at the coffee shop trying to resuscitate his Fuji. I went exploring the first part of the track: on paper, it seemed less interesting to shoot, and walking down the route in the opposite direction of the race, I confirmed the first impression. I went back to the finish/start just in time for the last race, starting at 15.30. Cameras were drowning, but working just fine.

The minutes before the start, when riders take place in the grid, seemed endless. Young riders were uselessly covered by umbrellas, but the water came from everywhere. The judges completed the operations as fast as they could. Luigi – who took these pictures of me as well- came back and shooted once more with the EM1: the day was almost over, we were now completely wet, so there was no point in staying indoor.

Eventually, the race started, and we ran once more to the Cinghiali section, where a few riders fell on the slippery rocks (without serious consequences, except a broken rib). After the first lap (out of 3) we went down along the route, taking some panning shots in the final straight section. We wanted to be close to the finish line.

What about the cameras?

After midday, the front lenses were accumulating condensation, and it became harder and harder to clean them. This is why pictures of the last races have haloes on the lighter parts, or visible water drops.

Of course, the glasses was permanently wet, and trying to keep it dry was pointless. The 40-150, with its big hood, was somewhat protected, but sprays of mud entered anyway when I shooted close pics of the riders. The 12-40 was without hood, and it was wet accordingly.

Besides this, I had a minor issue with the Em1 II, which is older (100.000 shots and 3.5 years): in the last hour or so, the tilt screen was black, as if water had reached the junction. Therefore, I could shoot only through the viewfinder.

This was the only real problem I had. Of course, camera were slippery because of the water, but the worked properly all day long. At home, I simply dried them near a warm source (there were spots of water even in the battery slot of the mkIII, probably because of when I replaced the battery) and everything came back to normal, even the MkII tilt screen.

So, is there a lesson to learn here ?

First, it’s crucial to choose the right gear and to trust it. Second, in for a penny, in for a pound. Kids were racing there, people were gathering along the track: so why shouldn’t we work normally? Moreover, most of the times, bad conditions help create good pictures, so it’s not the moment for taking care of your gear.

Gravel urbex – degrado in valli di Lanzo + preset LR

La prima delle piccole storie nel 2024.

Doveva essere il primo scollinamento a 2000m dell’anno, la prima gita ad alta quota; dopo le sortite azzardate di quest’autunno, c’era un certo ottimismo. Invece la nevicata del weekend (ancora nevica a febbraio?! Scandalo!) ha ridimensionato le nostre ambizioni: abbiamo abbassato la cresta e la quota e siamo partiti per esplorare la zona sopra Viù, dove c’è il complesso edilizio-sciistico abbandonato dell’Alpe Bianca.

Parte 1. L’hotel abbandonato

L’ecomostro abbozzato tra gli anni ’80 e ’90, e abbandonato ancora prima di essere usato (qui tutta la storia), colpisce per la ricchezza del materiale promozionale che era stato predisposto: insomma, hanno messo il carro davanti ai buoi con operazioni di marketing massicce, prevedendo di occupare ben 270 alloggi grazie ai due impianti di risalita. Col senno di poi, in questa bella ma piccola valle a 1450mt, sembra decisamente un peccato di hubris.

Ci fermiamo abbastanza da visitare tutti i locali agibili, compreso il piccolo edificio in cui ancora ci sono molti arredi e oggetti vari; ma il cielo si copre e preferiamo levare le tende prima di beccarci una nevicata.

Parte 2. La cava abbandonata

Dopo questa prima tappa, che era proprio sulla linea della neve, ci copriamo con tutti gli strati a disposizione e torniamo a valle da dove siamo saliti, mentre le nuvole si addensano. Dopo una breve pausa pranzo/riscaldamento a Lanzo risaliamo pigramente verso la cava abbandonata poco oltre Balangero, un sito squisitamente postapocalittico che non ha nulla da invidiare a Stalker, che sia il videogioco oppure il film (ehi, su YT c’è la versione completa!).

Da qui un veloce rientro sulla ciclabile lungo Stura, 30km in lieve discesa per un ultimo tocco di degrado e abbandono.

Preset – Winter degrado

E ora veniamo al preset. Per farla breve, ero in cerca di un settaggio creativo e spinto, per sperimentare. Ho trovato per caso quelli di @Ayitsphotography, ma alla fine l’ho adattato così tanto ai miei gusti che è diventato qualcosa di diverso. Certo, il concetto generale è rimasto: foto contrastate e croccanti, fredde ma non desaturate, per provare a esaltare l’abbandono e l’atmosfera da periferia del Nord. Però ho cambiato il 99% dei parametri, perciò ecco qui Degrado Nord, con un paio di esempi e un paio di disclaimer: primo, è un preset abbastanza carico, pensato per essere rifinito sulle singole foto in modo da attenuarne gli eccessi. Secondo, include una maschera cielo (dehaze e clarity negative), che ovviamente si può facilmente eliminare.

Backward projects

… or non-projects?

Sometimes you realize you have lots of images with a specific theme, or mood, or subject. What a waste of pictures!

What to do with all these otherwise forgotten material? Well, backward projects! Or, to put it otherwise, let’s put this stuff aside, and perhaps it will grow into something that makes sense. At the very least, you start thinking about a possible collection.

In my case, I found out that while documenting mountain rides, cycling events, and trainings, lots of photos piled up about two topics: transports (mainly trains) and leanings. So, why not putting them in line to see what happens?

2022 – Turin International Cyclocross

A full day of Cyclocross racing – all categories, all ages. A day of mud, music and fun!

What was good, or easy

The mood was very positive despite the coldish weather. The first categories (master amateurs) were great to get familiar with the different parts of the circuit, which offered many interesting perspectives, landscapes, and compositional opportunities.

In the afternoon, the low sun provided a nice, warm tone to the pictures.

What was bad, or hard

Neither bad nor hard; but taking nice shots of the crucial moments of the various races required a lot of walking (running, mostly). Of course, this was especially true in the morning. In the afternoon I could predict more effectively what would happen, and reduce the KMs walked. Experience is key!

Any surprise, good or bad

I did not have specific expectations – I was purposefully ignorant, to let work the mood and the scene rather than work it beforehand. And it worked quite well.

Pictures shot: about 1500.

Final output: about 40 pics.

Equipment: The usual. Olympus Em1mkII, Em1mkIII. Zuiko 12–40 f2.8, Lumix 35–100 F2.8.

A LGBTQ+ parade : colors, music, fun, lots of people!

What was bad, or hard

It’s always hard to choose the right place in such a big event. Yet, public spaces offer some interesting options, if you can walk a bit: multi-floor parkings, elevated parks, and long roads make for interesting compositions or points of view.

A few numbers

Pictures shot: about 400 in a couple hours.

Final output: about 25 pics.

Equipment: The usual. Olympus Em1mkII, Em1mkIII. Zuiko 12–40 f2.8, Zuiko 40-150 f2.8 PRO. No need for 17mm f1.2 since it was sunny and clear.

Brompton World Championship 2023

Turin, April 16, 2023.

During the second BikePiemonte Experience in Turin, the BWC took place all around the park. Folding races, gravel racing, but most of all a great deal of fun with the Brompton tribe/family/nation – as it pleases you 🙂

What was good, or easy

Easy and very fun to shoot customized bikes, customized riders, and people happy to take pictures.

What was bad, or hard

Actually, not much! People were very friendly and this made the job super smooth. The context was fun, the weather great. I can’t wait to shoot more of these folding bikes!

Any surprise, good or bad

It was surprising to see about 150 riders at the event; but besides the first reaction (and worry), the event was very well organized, the schedule clear.

Pictures shot: about 2500.

Final output: about 130 pics edited.

Equipment: The usual. Olympus Em1mkII, Em1mkIII. Zuiko 12–40 f2.8, Lumix 35–100 F2.8, Zuiko 17 f1.2. Plus a borrowed Lumix 8–18 f2.8–4 for test.
